Academic Themes

Professors and teachers from just about every discipline and educational level will find a useful discussion theme in the Minnesota 8 story of Selective Service draft resistance and draft board raids.

Suggested activities include:

  • See, "Public Events" at Peace & War in the Heartland
    1. Academic themes - start with overview of why a 1970s draft trial is relevant to 2007.
    2. students read the play and attend a performance (February 23 through March 9, 2008, University of Minnesota theatre in Rarig Center)
    3. classroom discussions and activities - Arts, Economics, Ecology, History, Moral Philosophy and Moral Theology, Political Science, Psychology, Religion & Spirituality, Women Studies
    4. organize a campus wide discussion on "Peace and War in the Heartland: What has history taught us?" bringing in diverse points of view
    5. arrange for a presentation by one of the Minnesota 8 at a chapter of your professional association or on your campus
    6. write a Letter to the Editor, an article for media accessible to you (from newspapers to newsletters, from bulletin boards to websites)
    7. create an original art form: music, poetry, dance, performance, plastic & graphic arts, etc.
